Group discussion: Facilitated by a Leader, candidates are asked to discuss among themselves hypothetical problems appropriate to the targeted position and arrive at a consensus decision or recommended solution.
These are the important and almost universally used tests. Assessors will observe a small group of candidates. One may be asked to chair the group, or the discussion may be a free for all. The subject for the discussion may be practical or hypothetical, e.g. which members of a sinking ships crew should have places in the only (small) lifeboat. Assessors will be looking (amongst other things) for persuasiveness, enthusiasm, active listening and participation, quality of expression, analytical thought, determination, and originality of ideas and sensitivity.
The aim of these exercises is to assess one's capacity for teamwork and leadership and one's ability to get to the heart of a problem quickly and effectively.

Group Discussions Can be used in the following circumstances;
Innovation in Simulations - Simulation Tools like Outbound Exercises, Contingency exercises, Dialogue- Extempore, Culture Fit, Process Work Benchmarking, Social Adaptation and Physical Endurance are innovations to be used to Assess Competencies.
Outbound Exercise is yet another area for implementation of Group Discussions – Outbound programs are externally focused competency identification and development tool and are done in a neutral setting. It generally revolves around simulated activities that bring family or stranger groups together to help them bond and build themselves into a team. There are specific outbound designed to improve specific competencies like leadership, communication skills, planning, change management, delegation, teamwork, and motivation.
Consultant’s and experts run outbound program as a part of their group and team dynamics experimentation process. It is experiential learning. As a process participants are divided into multiple types of sub groups and teams and assigned challenging and stretching tasks or activities for completion in a specified and pre determined time meant to get the best out of the participants in a simulated stretch situation.
Experts believe that best practice in an outbound exercise is only when achievement and performance during these activities is recorded, video graphed and reviewed individually with an assessor/trainer or in-group discussions to identify behaviors that enhance performance or lead to failure or decreased performance.
They believe that the euphoria and the excitement of the adventure do not help translate the learning into an articulated plan to learn and implement going forward. Strategies are formulated to deal with factors that hinder, and these strategies are then put to use in the activities that follow, to test their effectiveness.
